About This Port Said Tour
A visit to Cairo is like nothing you will ever experience. One minute you're immersed in the ancient culture and customs of Egypt circa 2500 B.C., then, before you can say "Tutankhamon," you completely fast-forward to a modern, vibrant city complete with shining skyscrapers that would give New York City a run for its money.
This may come as no surprise, as the Egyptians have always been pioneers when it comes to their structures. The Great Pyramids of Giza are a shining example of this architectural and engineering mastery for which they've become known.
You'll enjoy some free time to explore this massive mortuary complex that continues to stump engineers, architects, and historians who marvel at its technical and scientific precision. Long before there were cranes and trucks, ancient Egyptians managed to lift millions of stones averaging 2.5 tons each that were used to build these massive structures. And the most amazing part is they're still standing more than 4,500 years later.
No matter what your background, taste, or budget, you'll discover there's something for everyone in Cairo, and this tour is no exception. From ancient burial grounds to fine dining at a five-star hotel, you'll get a feel for just what makes this vibrant metropolis so fascinating.
Did E.T. do more than phone home?
Many people have commented that the precision and craftsmanship of ancient Egyptians was "out of this world." There may be more to that statement than meets the eye. An ancient papyrus speaks of "strange Fiery Disks" that lit up the sky like the sun around 1480 B.C. As these "disks" ascended back into space, fish and other volatiles rained down from the sky. Ironically, the original papyrus has disappeared. Coincidence?
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign. Staying at a hotel? Be sure to advise the GoBe Crew so we can meet you in the lobby.
No still or video cameras are allowed in Cairo's Museum of Antiquities. In many shops, bargaining can get you a better price. Be aware that some vendors are very persistent. Many shops close between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The local currency is the Egyptian pound.
Entrance inside the Pyramids is not included in the tour; time permitting travelers can request to enter inside the Pyramids burial chambers at their own cost. This optional experience is not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia or have back or knee issues.
Plan to walk for over a mile, mostly over gravel/paved surfaces. Some wheelchair paths available; folding wheelchairs only, please. If you have limited mobility, this tour may be too challenging for you to enjoy and maintain the pace of the group.
