      About This Safaga Tour

You'll feel like you're in a movie. And you'll meet descendants of people who made history. The acclaimed movie Lawrence of Arabia told the story of the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918 – the beginning of Arabia wresting independence from the ruling Ottoman Turks and starting the fall of the six-century-old Ottoman Empire.

The hardy, desert-dwelling Bedouin were central to the ultimate success of the revolt. Forged from the heat of the desert, these original Arabs had for centuries ruthlessly raided their enemies, often neighboring tribes, for what they needed for their nomadic existence. The Bedouin were uniquely adapted to the desert and knew it well. So, while woefully outnumbered by the Turks, they proved to be masters of guerilla warfare, stealth, and guile, tormenting the enemy by blowing up bridges, raiding garrisons, and derailing supply trains.

While today's Bedouin no longer rely on plundering for their existence, their lives may be more complex. Their ancient customs and traditions have come face-to-face with a modern world of mobile phones, television, and computers. Some still maintain traditional ways that date back thousands of years. For others, the ancient lifestyle is vanishing, as the pickup truck displaces the camel and 100-gallon water barrels replace the wells.

But no matter which path modern Bedouin choose, they are perhaps best described by this poetic saying: "The Bedouin are strong like the desert, soft like the sand, moving like the wind, forever free." Don't miss your chance to meet them.

      Arabian knights

While considered brave and ruthless, the Bedouin are bound by a code of honor and known for their hospitality. (The Knights of the Crusades admired Bedouin ideals and adapted them to their code of ethics.) Bedouin generosity even extends to enemies. They believe that an enemy who had "once dismounted and touched the rope of a single tent" should be treated as guest and friend. Until they next met in battle, we assume.
