Sharm el Sheikh, on the southern edge of the Sinai Peninsula, has become a modern day oasis for experiencing another side of Egypt apart from its famed antiquities in the desert. With the Red Sea's growing popularity as one of the world's top diving destinations, this area has transformed itself from humble beginnings to evolve into a glittering seaside retreat.
Before the last occupation of Israel in the Sinai, "Sharm" was a simple Egyptian fishing village. It would initially serve as its strategic point between the two coasts of the peninsula. But the Israelis envisioned tourism possibilities for Sharm with its powdery soft beach and the temperate waters of the Red Sea. Developing the shoreline also provided some needed financing sources for their settlements, before the area would be turned back to Egypt in 1979.
Decades later, Sharm el Sheikh has grown into a premier destination for sun-worshippers as well as diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. On this partially guided tour of Sharm's Na'ama Bay area, enjoy being lazy on a luxurious stretch of golden beach sand at a leading private resort. Splash around in the water, either in the near-tropical ocean or in the hotel's luxurious swimming pool.
When you board a modern glass-hulled vessel, you'll marvel at the nature's aquarium. Return to the resort and indulge in a sumptuous buffet lunch, then continue your pure relaxation sessions. The glass-hulled boat and lunch are at additional cost. You'll have the VIP beach experience that's a far cry from those of the old-time fishermen.
Soak up the souq
After your day at the beach, you may opt for an evening walk through the open-air Arabian bazaar, or souq. At Sharm al-Maya (Sharm Old Market), you'll find finely a heady hodge-podge of traditional treasures including engraved woodwork, shisha pipes, Arabic lamps, and all manner of spices and herbs. Admire your acquisitions over dinner in one of the old market's cheerful cafes.
