Red Sea Wonders Snorkeling Trip at Ras Mohammed

      Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
From (USD) $113 Per Person (Based on 2)
      • National Park: View the great expanse of the blue-shaded Gulf of Aqaba from the high-point promontory of Ras Mohammed, as well as the nearby Shark Observatory.
      • Snorkeling: Swim in one of the most prized natural "aquariums" in the world with native fish and coral reefs at nearly every turn, then relax on the golden beach.
      • Mangroves 101: Tour the park's mangrove swamp, where plants take in water from the ocean but siphon off the saltiness to flourish in the intense desert heat and ecosystem.
About This Sharm El Sheikh Tour

The Red Sea has been a bucket list item for scuba divers and snorkelers from all over the world. Its separation from the open water has created a proliferation of marine life and coral reef habitats unrivaled by other popular diving sites. Nowhere is that more true than in the protected area of Ras Mohammed National Park, about 20 miles south of bustling Sharm el Sheikh.

The park's name comes from the promontory that resembles a profile of the prophet Mohammed, who supposedly trekked through here in the seventh century. Fishing had been a mainstay for millennia but made a negative impact on the ecosystem. After Egypt regained the Sinai, the government sought to protect it by creating the park, eventually established in 1983.

Jacques Cousteau, the famous French ocean explorer, named Shark Reef as one of his personal favorite places to dives. The other popular site is Yolanda Reef, named after the Cypriot ship that sunk nearby in 1980. On the ocean floor, bathroom fixtures such as toilets and bathtubs covered in underwater growth can be seen. Some have even spied the captain's BMW in the azure depths.

While you may or may not spot a coral-covered toilet on your snorkeling excursion here, you will marvel at the abundance of marine life. Take in a breathtaking view at the promontory, then snorkel at the beach. Tour the unique mangrove swamp, then return to Sharm, dreaming about all of the sea life you saw in vivid color and checking another item off your bucket list.

      History's ship graveyard

With its location of Africa on one side and the Arabian Peninsula on the other, the Red Sea has a surprisingly notorious reputation for shipwrecks. Storm systems, countless reefs, unpredictable currents, and gale-force winds have all contributed to the demise of many vessels over time. The most famous of these, the SS Thistlegorm and the Dunraven, are close to Ras Mohammed and popular with divers.
