      About This Shanghai Tour

Your expectations are sure to be exceeded with this one-of-a-kind tour, which will give you a glimpse into Shanghai’s fascinating history. Slip on some comfortable footwear, because you will be embarking on a leisurely stroll from one of China’s most famous hotels, Astor House Hotel. An expert on Chinese history will teach you about modern life, help you to plan your trip in the “Paris of the Orient”, as well as enlighten you on the area’s international settlement during the 19th and 20th centuries.

From the hotel, you will step back in time to the 1840s, when the area was under British control, although nominally controlled by the Chinese. Now an art, liberal and cultural hub, Shanghai’s rise to fame was driven by events following the Opium War. In central Shanghai, you will find The Bund, which was established after the city was incorporated as a trading port in 1846. Snaking for 1,500 meters from Waibaidu Bridge to Nanpu Bridge, the waterway is an attractive sight, overlooking a medley of grandiose buildings that exhibit Classicism, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Romanesque architecture.

Before you immerse yourself in more solitary surroundings like the ‘Headstream of the Bund,’ better known as the Waitanyuan, a Chinese historian will lead you to the Cathay Peace Hotel and old HSBC premises - two buildings that served as the backdrop for Shanghai’s multicultural beginnings. If you’re lucky, you will be able to step foot inside the former home of English ballerina, Margot Fonteyn. Conclude the day admiring the Yuyuan Garden next to City God Temple.

      The Pride of Shanghai

Instantly recognizable, “The Bund” actually means “ the embankment of a muddy waterfront”. The name was inspired by an Anglo-Indian term and the area was owned by Baghdadi Jews back in the 1930s. In the colonial era, the Chinese were not allowed to access Shanghai Bund, which exhibits classical eclectic and neo-renaissance styles.
