      6-Person Tsukiji Market Food Tour

      Tokyo, Japan
From (USD) $121 Per Person (Minimum 2)
      • Tsukiji Market: Sample your way through the outer retail area, a warren of narrow lanes stretching several blocks next to the wholesale market, where the famous tuna auctions take place.
      • A feast for all the senses: Amid the buzzing bustle of the market's merchants and buyers, you'll get a brief history of Japanese cuisine, including how it's influenced by geography and the seasons; how its presentation is designed for aesthetic appeal; and the central role that seafood plays.
      • More than a guide: Even by GoBe standards, your tour leader is special. Known officially as "docents" (from the Latin for teacher), these Ph.D. and M.A.-level chefs or food writers provide a wealth of fascinating insights into Japanese culture and cuisine in just three hours.
      About This Tokyo Tour

It's one of the most biggest and most famous food markets in the world. And while freshness is paramount at Tsujiki, its history and traditions go back centuries, as shown in displays of pre-1935 photographs and woodblock prints.

Our walk through the outer market includes a section of small shops that sell restaurant-quality kitchen supplies, including some of the world's finest hand-forged cutlery. Your docent explains how different items are used to create some of the dishes you'll taste later in the tour, and how Japanese cuisine plays to the senses. As we taste our way through the walk and sit-down lunch, you'll see how impeccably presented everything is, from humble rice balls to delicate sushi and sashimi, pickled delicacies (tsukemono), miso soup, the slightly sweet omelet known as tamagoyaki, meat dumplings, tempura, and more.

By the end of the tour, you'll have a deeper appreciation of the tastes, textures, aromas, artistry, and history of Japanese cuisine.
