Beach Horseback Ride to Fort James and Back
St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda.
- Fort James Beach: You won't find looming hotels or expensive condos at this stretch of white sand. Find respite from crowds with rolling green hills on one side and turquoise waters on the other.
- Historic Fort James: Step back in time to the 18th century, a time when the British were under constant threat from the French. Enjoy timeless views from this protected harbor and stop for a photo opportunity of the Antiguan coastline.
- Runaway Beach: Located on the northwestern edge of the island, this beach is known for being unoccupied even though a few hotels are nearby. The bone-white sands stretch out alongside calm blue waters, the perfect setting for your horseback ride.
About this St. John's tour
Sitting astride a magnificent horse, it's easy enough to imagine yourself as one of the British soldiers who built Fort James back in the 18th century. Their mission was to guard the island against the French who'd been claiming nearby islands since the early 1600s.
As you walk through the fort, take a look at the cannons that still face the water. Eight men were needed per mortar. With an 8-pound charge, a gun could have fired a 24 pound ball as far as a mile and half. As late as the 19th century, this ordinance would fire salutes to the visiting ships and signal sunrise and sunset. Fortunately, no attack ever came and the citadel never saw combat. Otherwise, you'd never be able to roam freely as you do now across the grounds that once supported as many as 75 soldiers.
Check out the foundations of the original walls as well as the powder magazine. There are just enough stone constructions and overgrown foliage to make you feel like Indiana Jones on a tropical adventure. In other words, it's perfect for some atmospheric vacation photos. Get shots from the top for some stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding land and sea.
Sitting astride a magnificent creature like a horse, with the ocean breeze gently flowing through your hair and the sun kissing your back may be the best way to experience Antigua. Pay attention to the guide to take in sights and local history. Or allow your mind to wander across the white sands and clear water welcoming you under a warming sun.
Unlike many coastline locales in Antigua, Runaway Beach attracts few crowds and features tranquil waters. Peddlers are refreshingly out of sight. When you ride in the water, you’ll be wearing your safety helmet and buoyancy belts for safety. There will be an opportunity to shower at the end of your tour. End your tour with a cold drink or filling lunch, which is available for purchase at the bar/cafe.
White Sand from Fish Dung?
Although beach sand comes in many colors, the grains of white from Antigua come mostly from parrotfish poop. These creatures rely on their tough beaks and fused-together teeth to chew coral and rock. The hard materials get ground up into the fine white sand that eventually washes up on the coast.
