About This Nassau Tour
Once a pirate's mansion, Graycliff is now home to a luxurious boutique hotel and five-star restaurant. But owner Enrico Garzaroli wasn't quite satisfied at that. He loved a good cigar, but felt none on the market lived up to the cuisine served in Graycliff's restaurant. Like any sensible entrepreneur, he hired Master Torcedore Avelino Lara (formerly Fidel Castro's personal cigar roller) to create a signature blend. And so Graycliff Cigar Company was born in 1997.
Now an award-winning producer of fine cigars, the company has 16 expert craftsmen on its payroll. These torcedores don't use molds. They hand-roll each cigar in the generous shapes and sizes reminiscent of simpler times and fabrication methods. Graycliff's many specialty blends include Original, Professionale, Emerald, Crystal, Espresso, Chateau Grand Cru, Heritage Royale, and G2.
And just as the executive chef in Graycliff's five-star restaurant knows every detail about the provenance of each ingredient that goes into his culinary masterpieces, Graycliff Cigar Company's torcedores command an expertise about the history of tobacco, where the best leaves are grown, and exactly which ones to blend for superior flavor in their fine cigars.
Time to roll! Now that you understand a bit more about tobacco, you'll discover the art of rolling your own cigar under the guidance of Graycliff's torcedores. In addition to learning how to sort, clean, and roll a cigar, you'll also be taught how to light and savor it. As the saying goes, if you got 'em, smoke 'em. So you're in luck because you'll be bringing home your personally hand-rolled cigar, plus another Graycliff masterpiece, as well as a cigar cutter.
Close, but no cigar
The year was 1961. The U.S. embargo against Cuba hadn't yet been signed, but Fidel Castro was definitely on the radar. Some say the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was ordered to taint cigars with the botulism toxin and deliver them to the Cuban dictator. (We don't believe the mission of this covert operation was to prevent wrinkles.) Castro later commented that the CIA's "diplomatic gift" contained notes of leather and gorgonzola cheese, but gave him diarrhea.
