      About This Samana Tour

Want to get a quick island getaway into your island getaway? Then escape with us to beautiful Cayo Levantado. This picture-perfect speck of paradise in Samana Bay has it all: palm-lined white-sand beaches, great snorkeling in clear turquoise waters, and more.

You may hear Levantado referred to by its other name: Bacardi Island. Don't go looking for a Bacardi factory, though. A Bacardi rum commercial was filmed there in the 1980s, so the association – and the name – stuck. That said, sit back on the beach and feel free to order up a rum drink – it's included (and unlimited) during your visit there, along with an assortment of tropical drinks, beer, soda, and juice. You'll also enjoy a barbeque lunch right on the beach.

Climb into a hammock for an afternoon snooze in the breeze, then refresh yourself with a plunge into the bay. There are also quaint little shops lining the beach, selling all manner of locally made souvenirs. Ready for something different? Return to your beach chair and turn it in a different direction. The views are gorgeous no matter where you look. This is island hopping, Dominican style.

The island paradise that almost wasn't

In 1868, Dominican President Buenaventura Baez was hot to sell the Samana Peninsula to the U.S. – the cash would have financed an army he needed to stay in power. After the U.S. Senate squashed the deal, he leased the peninsula to the Samana Bay Company, an American-based company, for 99 years. But the company fell behind on its payments after just three years, and Baez's successor killed the contract, allowing relieved Dominicans to reclaim their property.
