About This Fredriksted Tour
Get ready to immerse yourself in the history of St. Croix. On this tour, you will learn about the history of the town during the plantation era, and sugar boom, through the well-preserved architecture and artifacts at the Estate Whim Museum. Then it’s time for some rum with the Captain. Learn about the man behind this legendary world-famous rum.
The Whim Plantation Museum is a true testament to utilizing local resources. Made of coral and rock bonded together with a mortar of seashells and sugar molasses, the museum provides an unforgettable glimpse of the days when sugar trade ruled the world. Check out the sugar factory ruins and roam the grounds to see a 1700s windmill and slave quarters. Also, make time to view the local arts, crafts, furniture, prints and souvenirs at the museum.
The next attraction on your tour is the Captain Morgan Visitors’ Center. The Center is part of Diageo’s Captain Morgan Rum Distillery and provides a fascinating history about the Captain. Learn about how rum distilling started in St. Croix and see various artifacts of the rum industry. Drop by the tasting bar for some samples of smooth, local rum.
8 Years of Restoration
The Whim Estate was sold to the U.S. by the Danish West Indian Company in 1932 and by 1954, after years of neglect, the museum looked terrible. The Whim was wrapped in vines and weeds and had a rotting roof allowing hundreds of Jack Spaniards (wasps) and fruit bats to take up residence and the floors were dominated by centipedes and mice. It was not until 1962 that the museum was restored to the beautiful sight it is today.
