Take extra precautions to avoid too much exposure to the sun. Even on cloudy days, the UV is stronger than you may think.
Tour Participation Requirements
Located on the west end of St. Croix, Frederiksted has a long history that can be seen from its monuments such as the 19th Century Apothecary, the Customs House, the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and others you will see on this historical tour.
Fort Fredrik is one of the many attractions you will come across during your walking tour of this port city. It is at this red and white fort that the first salute shot to the new nation of the United States of America was fired from foreign soil. Learn more about the history of the slave trade at the art gallery and museum in the fort.
Next up is the St. George Botanical Garden that features about 1500 native and exotic plant species, including colorful orchids and ferns. A cactus garden and a rainforest walk are amongst the attractions that await you as well as a restored slave cottage converted into a small library.
Frederiksted, the “Freedom City”
Frederiksted is referred to as the “Freedom City” by the locals because the proclamation for the abolition of slavery was read by Governor General Peter Van Scholten in 1848 at Fort Frederik.
