Xibalba is the Mayan name for their underworld their "place of fear." And caves are the entrances to that hell, home to their twelve death gods. But no worries they're too busy battling each other to bother you, so you can relax and enjoy the amazing sights.
In Nohoch Chen, the archaeological preserve where your adventure takes place, there's an approximately 19-mile network of caves in what's known as the "Cave's Branch Valley." Your excursion beneath the earth takes you through three of these caves. You'll explore a mysterious world of stalagmites and stalactites, intricate crystalline formations.
Despite its rather foreboding name, Xibalba offers a gateway to a living, breathing ecosystem that does feel like another world. The place of fear is a place of wonder.
Can you hear me now?
Caves weren't just the gateway to the underworld for the Maya. They were also a place to connect with the spirit world. Caves were used for burials and sacrifices, and served as a "phone booth" that mortals seeking advice could enter to speak with spirits. Nearly every cave in Belize was used as a ceremonial cave for the Maya, including the ones you'll visit.
