      About this Belize City tour

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird. It's a plane. It's you?

Such is the refrain you'll hear in your head as you fly across the lush canopy of a tropical rainforest and not just any rainforest. The Nohoch Chen Archaeological Park was once the stomping grounds of the ancient Maya. One can only imagine what they'd make of humans flying more than a hundred feet above the floor of their home, whooping it up with gleeful screeches. Perhaps they'd think us one of their countless gods.

This is definitely NOT your grandfather's sightseeing tour. It's one thing to learn about the flora used by the ancient Maya in their rituals and medicines; it's another thing entirely to zip through it and see it up close. You'll make it to one platform, and as soon as your heart stops pounding from excitement, it's time to make an even longer run.

For all their ingenious engineering achievements pyramids and vast cities with sophisticated road networks even the Maya never imagined such a fast-moving and scenic way to get around.

And he did it without a safety net

Zip-lining has some crazy ancestors. In 1739, British steeplejack Robert Cadman would tie off a rope from the top of a steeple and make whatever repairs were necessary. He'd then position a small wooden board on the ropes, lay headfirst on his belly, and slide down the rope with great showmanship to thunderous applause from the gathered masses. During the last of these performances, the rope snapped and he plummeted to his death. Our lines are much safer of course.
