      About this Belize City tour

There are two things that define Belize: jungle and water. On this particular adventure, you get the best of both.

The Olde Belize River cuts through the tropical rainforest, putting you in the heart of this lush ecosystem. As you enjoy a leisurely voyage on an 8-person raft, you'll see all manner of creatures on land and water andndash; endless varieties of birds, howler monkeys, giant iguanas, maybe even a crocodile or two.

You'll also notice local farms along your route. One of them is found at the Rainforest River Camp, where you'll make a stop to enjoy a fresh snack of the fruit and vegetables grown there. You'll even learn a few things, like the fact that a cashew is actually a seed (not a nut) that grows at the bottom of the cashew apple. And when you see what it looks like in its unprocessed form, you'll think, "That's totally nuts!"

When the Olde Belize River was younger

There was a time when the Olde Belize River was just ... the Belize River. English and Scottish settlers, along with pirates known as the Baymen, established a logging colony here in the 17th century. They frequently clashed with Spaniards who'd claimed the area, culminating in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. The anniversary of their victory is a national holiday in Belize, celebrating the "first Belizeans" and the Baymen.
