Sky Tram and Sky Trek Arenal Adventure
Arenal, Costa Rica
- Sky Tram: Enjoy the slow climb over a vast, private nature reserve. If you wish, a park naturalist accompanies you to describe the amazing rainforest ecosystems below – you pass through several. Feel free to stop and hover for perfect photos.
- Peak experience: The tram lets you off at an observation platform with comfortable chairs positioned for prime viewing of Arenal Lake, Arenal Volcano, and the Tilaran Mountain Range.
- Sky Trek: This thrilling course zooms down the mountain on multiple zip lines at speeds topping 50 mph – and up to 656 feet high. Feel like keeping things slow and easy? You can always take the tram back to base.
This combo package lets you set the pace. Start with an unhurried tram ride up the mountain that lets you stop and dangle over the jungle canopy. Arrive at the summit and chill on the observation deck. Take a nature walk, if you like. The tram runs all day, so there's no rush to leave. But if you're up for a rush of pure adrenaline, there's a faster way down: Sky Trek.
This is serious fun: a soaring zip line course of varying lengths that get progressively longer and faster. You can't actually see where it ends, adding to the thrill. (Or terror.) Rest assured that you'll have the benefit of brief instruction from a park pro, full safety gear, and a state-of-the-art braking system.
But all that's for the logical part of your brain. The primitive part will only know that you wind up flying very fast and very high, above and between tall treetops. And whether that's thrilling or terrifying is up to you.
You can always take the tram.
The specifics of speed
Fifty miles an hour on a stretch of open highway is no great shakes. But it can induce quakes on the most intense stretch of Sky Trek. You're hanging with gloved hands from (and sturdily buckled to) what you know is thick steel cable, yet it can start to look like kite string as the laws of gravity and acceleration kick in – and those treetops get closer. Psychologists call this "action-specific perception." The same effect makes a fastball look bigger and slower to a batter on a hitting streak.
Please meet in the lobby or reception area of your hotel. Our representative will be holding a sign with your name or the tour's name on it. You must confirm the name of your hotel at checkout, so we know where to pick you up.
Take extra precautions to avoid too much exposure to the sun. Even on cloudy days, the UV is stronger than you may think.
Most shops are closed from 1-3 pm and all day on Sundays. Viva la siesta.
As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind.
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, some of which is over gravel, rocks, and dirt paths that can be kind of natural. The nature of the terrain makes it unsuited to travelers with limited mobility and those who use a wheelchair.
