About this Hallstatt tour
Snugged right into a sheer mountainside and reflected in a glass-like lake, this village is a knockout. Its beauty is reason enough to visit. But along with the awe of seeing Hallstatt come a few curiosities. Why have people lived in this hard-to-reach spot for eons? What brought the wealth that's reflected in its fine buildings? As your guide unlocks the answers, Hallstatt's enchanting sights and stories unfold.
There's salt in those hills around town. Hallstatt mined this valuable resource since prehistoric times, and the world's first-known salt mine is located high above the village. You'll see the signs of salt-mine riches as you wander the fine old market square and admire the tightly stacked stone and timber buildings. Along the way, your guide catches you up on how centuries of salty affluence have shaped this picturesque village.
While Hallstatt has enjoyed prosperity, it's always been short on space. Squeezed between the mountains and the shore, cemeteries filled up quickly. You'll discover how burials were once temporary, with graves opened after a while to make more room in the crowded graveyards. The village's 15th-century Catholic church is a repository for the bones and you'll see rows of skulls painted with decorative motifs. (If embellished skulls aren't to your liking, the church also has frescoes and a lovely altar to admire.)
All these sights give a flavor of Hallstatt's heritage. And you get a multilayered peek into the past at the archeological excavations, where tools and artifacts go way back to 7,000 years ago. After peering into the past, step back into the modern-day village and see its quaint streets in a new light. There was a Hallstatt before there was a Rome.
It takes a village to inspire a clone
The Chinese were captivated by Hallstatt. So captivated they duplicated it. The village has been copied in the Guangdong Province, complete with a lake and replicas of the original church, fountain, and other structures. The mayor of the original Hallstatt personally visited the opening ceremony in China in 2012 to ink an agreement for cultural exchange with the copycat version of his town.
