About this Innsbruck tour
With every step, this walking tour lures you back to the days of Emperor Maximilian I. You'll see his glittering Golden Roof, completed in 1500 as an emblem to mark his wedding and now the city's most celebrated symbol. Your guide unlocks the secrets of this building's coats of arms and heraldic flags (and why Maximilian is pictured with both his first and second wives).
Around this dazzling landmark, Altstadt (Old Town) unfolds, its twisting lanes and tall facades little changed over the centuries. You'll discover how this glorious architecture reveals a fascinating past. Just one example is Hofburg, the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburg dynasty. Built in the 15th century, it was expanded by Maximilian and gussied up with Baroque and Rococo touches in the 18th century by Empress Maria Theresa.
The Hofkirche, a Gothic masterpiece and one of Europe's finest royal court churches, has 28 life-size bronze figures watching over the Emperor's tomb. (Strangely, it's empty and your guide can tell you why.) Admire the fanciful Helblinghaus, where ornate 18th-century Rococo motifs adorn the facade like icing on a festive cake. And discover how the Tyrolean State Theater, a thriving arts center, has its roots in a 1600s Comedihaus.
Meander the streets, admire the splashes of grandeur, listen to the song of cathedral bells, and take in the atmosphere of opulent Old Town. And if you're fascinated by legends, ponder the inspiring quote said to be found on the Golden Roof. It says: "Use every moment, dance every dance, you can't take anything with you."
Not all that glitters…
Those snow-capped peaks and the Golden Roof aren't the only gleaming sights to catch your eye around Innsbruck. Daniel Swarovski established his crystal-cutting factory in nearby Wattens in 1895 to take advantage of the hydroelectric power he needed to create his sparkling crystal products. Today, a glittering showroom of Swarovski is just a gem's toss from the Golden Roof in Old Town.
