About This Innsbruck Tour
St. James Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Innsbruck (Hofkirche), is one of the most important religious sites in Austria. Below the three domes that adorn its Baroque architecture you'll find a facade composed of Hotting breccia, a visually stunning limestone deposited by retreating glaciers.
The concave exterior, which has several arch- and oval-shaped windows, is flanked by two bell towers, one of which contains a clock that's more than 300 years old. And a dome rests above the transept in the central portion of the building.
But while the cathedral's exterior is impressive, it's what you'll find on the inside that will truly move you.
Marble altars, columns and statues grace the expansive interior of the cathedral. The sense of endless space is accentuated by frescos painted by Bavaria artist Cosmas Damien Asam, which were intended to intensify the optical illusion. An abundance of natural lighting comes through the many windows and enhances the beauty of the frescos. Renaissance-style stucco work done by the artist's younger brother, Egid Quirin Asam, is used to add color and form to the dominant paintings.
The high dome illuminates the choir area and directs the eye toward the high altar. But the main attraction is the stunning painting of Mary of Succor above the main altar. Created by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1520, it became one of the most revered images of the Virgin Mary in the Christian world. And helped make the cathedral one of the top destinations in Innsbruck.

When money is no object
The Imperial Palace was originally built in Gothic style in 1460. Between 1754 and 1773, Empress Maria Theresa remodeled the palace by adding Baroque and Rococo elements. She also spared no expense on lavish ceiling paintings, exquisite furnishings, and expensive Renaissance art found throughout the palace. It became a monument to extravagance – which the empress visited only twice.
