Linz Old and New Guided Walking Tour
- Ars Electronica Center: Admire the ultramodern facade of the high-tech "Museum of the Future," which becomes a colorful light show when the sun goes down.
- Lentos Museum of Modern Art: Like the Ars Electronica across the Danube, the rectangular glass and steel Lentos Museum is dramatically illuminated at night.
- The Neuer Dom: The giant, Gothic New Cathedral features pinnacles, flying buttresses, and a tower purposely kept to 439 feet, so it wouldn't outshine Vienna's St. Stephan.
- Hauptplatz: Lined by ornate Baroque pastel-colored houses from the Renaissance era, Old Town's main square features a 60-foot marble trinity column carved in 1723.
About this Linz Tour
Welcome to Linz, a city as much about vision as it is about sights. This UNESCO City of Media Arts has its eyes on a high-tech future, even as it celebrates its 2,000-year history.
The future comes to life at the renowned Ars Electronica Center, home of the world's largest archive of cyber arts. Billed as a place for inquiry, discovery, experimentation and exploration, the center's labs let you interact with robots, animate digital objects, and virtually travel to outer space.
Perhaps it's that last part that best explains the center's unique architecture, which sort of looks like a futuristic space ship. In the evening, as it gets dark, the center's LED glass skin comes to life with continuously changing kaleidoscope-like patterns and colors, creating a tableau that befits science fiction.
The annual Ars Electronica festival draws more than 35,000 people, helping to make Linz one of Europe's hottest cultural capitals. But they still bake the famous Linzer torte here, as they have for four centuries. The city with a vision for the future keeps its past in plain view. You will only see the outside of this impressive building on this tour but we highly recommend checking out the inside as well (on your own time.)
The old market square in the city of Linz is dominated by a 60-foot, white marble statue of the Trinity in a style typical of the Baroque period. It was erected in 1723 to show the gratitude of those who had survived a trio of disasters: a Turkish invasion in1704, a fire in 1712, and an outbreak of bubonic plague in 1713.
Pick-up is included from select hotels. Please specify your hotel name and location during check-out.
Bring small local coins for the bathroom. Take a rain coat and/or umbrella in case of rain. Don't miss out on tasting the various desserts offered in this Austrian region, especially "Linzer Torte." Linz is also famous for its local shops but you can also find a lot of global brands (shopping is possible before/after tour and not during the tour).
Travelers must be able to walk approximately 1.3 miles (roughly 1 Hour 30 Minutes) over paved surfaces, steps and inclines with several photo stops along the route.
