Seefeld Guided Walking Tour
- St. Oswald Parish Church: This Gothic church became a place of pilgrimage after the Miracle of the Host in 1384, and had to be expanded to accommodate its many visitors.
- Church of the Lake: The small but picturesque Seekirchl features a delicate white facade with black onion dome and spire. Originally, it was surrounded by water.
- The Stations of the Cross: Follow the meandering stone path through stations representing the 12 Apostles to the Stone Circle, where boulders weighing as much as 23 tons depict the Last Supper.
About this Seefeld Tour
People have been traveling to Seefeld since it was first founded in 1022. At first they came because Seefeld lay along an important Middle Ages trade route. But it was in the 14th century, when it became a pilgrimage destination (after the Miracle of the Host) that the number of visitors swelled.
As the story goes, it was during a mass in 1384 that a local knight and trustee of St. Oswald Church (coincidentally named Oswald Milser) walked up to the altar, sword in hand, and demanded the large portion of the communion wafer that normally goes to the priest.
Taken aback, and knowing the knight was both important and impatient, the priest did not refuse him. But the moment the wafer touched Sir Oswald's lips, the stone floor under him began to tremble, then opened and started to swallow him.
Sir Oswald grabbed the altar, trying to keep himself from falling. The priest quickly removed the wafer from the knight's lips, and the trembling stopped. But the wafer started to run with blood, causing the repentant knight to fall to his knees and beg forgiveness for his arrogance.
Sir Oswald Milser quietly retreated from public life and went to live at a nearby monastery, where he died two years later.
Today, a hole below the altar is still visible, as is the altar itself; it retains the handprints of the desperate knight.
Peace be unto you
The Way of the Cross and Stone Circle at St. Oswald Church represent fundamental Christian concepts. But the man who created it in 2000, Winfried Werner, dedicated his work as a peaceful place for people of all the world's religions to meet. Indeed, the idea was quickly accepted. Before long, thousands of people from the most diverse religions had visited this special place.
Please make your own way to Edenparkplatz, Dorfplatz (village place) in front of Oswaldkirche. Please look for your tour representative with the displayed logo sign.
