About This Dubrovnik Tour
Dubrovnik's intact ring of double walls and protective fortresses is impossible to really picture until you've seen it in person. A defensive barrier begun in the 9th century and repeatedly fortified, it encased the entire city by the 1600s.
And there's absolutely no cooler way to see the walls than from a kayak, up close at sea level, bobbing in the Adriatic in the shadow of their awesomeness. Running longer than a mile, standing up to 80 feet high, and five to 10 feet thick, the walls hug the city like a suit of ancient stone armor. And they were well armed against seaborne visitors with malicious intent.
Luckily for today's kayak armadas, Old Town's cannons long ago went silent. In fact, the largest of Fort Lovrijenac's 10 big guns – an elaborately decorated monster from 1537 known as The Lizard – is now in Davy Jones' locker. The Austrians accidentally dropped it in the drink when they disarmed the Fortress in the 19th century. You may well paddle right over it.
You'll have no trouble spotting Lovrijenac – just look for the gigantic triangular stronghold high atop a 120-foot sheer rock rising out of the sea near the old harbor entrance. You'll instantly get why they call this stronghold "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar." And why the Croatian leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series happens here.
You'll also get why it's doubled as the Red Keep, ruling castle of King's Landing in HBO's Game of Thrones. And why Fort Bokar, the Pile Gate, and lots of Dubrovnik's city walls have been featured, too. This whole place belongs in Westeros.
Yet less than half a mile off this stonework-encrusted shore sits Lokrum Island, where the setting goes all natural. Unpopulated for reasons of cursedness (see below), this curvy little islet is lush with oaks, pines, and olive trees. We'll paddle round it, work up a nice sweat and an appetite, then hit idyllic Betina beach for a refreshing swim.
This spot's ultra-clear water, high craggy walls, and crazy cave roof give it a remote vibe so convincing you'll think you landed smack in the middle of a Survivor: Croatia episode.
Just 1,969 feet off bustling Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island is all forests and peace. No cars, no residents (except a wild flock of peacocks who hitched in from the Canaries 150 years ago), no overnighters. But plenty of legends. Like the one about Richard the Lionheart being shipwrecked here in 1192 on his way home from the Crusades. Probably true. The one about expelled Benedictine monks leaving a curse behind in 1808? Maybe true. The tourist tales about that curse working, with a trail of mysterious deaths to prove it? Pure bunk.
Please make your way to Pile Bay, accessible from Dubrovnik Old Town, close to Restaurant Orhan. Your guide will be holding a yellow paddle.
Your tour includes a life jacket, helmet, and waterproof storage. You will get wet during this sea kayak adventure, so maybe bring an extra change of clothes.
