      About this Aarhus tour

Spend some time strolling the cobbled lanes of Den Gamle By – Danish for "The Old Town" _– and you'll swear you've gone back in time. When it was originally created in 1909, the idea was to preserve the ideal of Danish life during the Hans Christian Andersen era. As you stroll the streets, you'll encounter villagers who don't just dress the part of their historic counterparts -- they become them. Chat with the widow of the town clergyman, and she'll tell you how she's getting by on her own. The barkeep will relate tales of some of his more memorable patrons. There's also a quarter dedicated to the 1920s, with a more "modern" ambience – telephone wires, electric street lights, and tools sold at the local ironmonger's shop. Or visit a commune from the groovy 1970s. This is a total trip through time, where you don't just see exhibits on Denmark's history and culture. You live it. A whole country of bodyguards despite being gifted with Marselisborg Palace by his subjects, King Christian X resisted bringing democracy to Denmark, making him unpopular for a time. But he became a symbol of resistance during the German occupation of Denmark during WWII, financing the transport of Danish Jews to unoccupied Sweden.  That's why a boy told a German soldier that "All of Denmark is his bodyguard" when the king rode through the streets during the occupation without a security detail.
