      • Royal treatment: See the changing of the guard at Amalienborg, the royal family's winter palace. Stroll the King's Garden at Rosenborg Palace, then visit the museum and see the crown jewels. Head south along the harbor to Christiansborg, a former royal residence that now houses Parliament and the Supreme Court; tour the lavish royal reception areas, the Throne Room, and the underground ruins of a 12th-century castle.
      • Copenhagen climbs: Make your way up the spiral ramp of the 17th-century Round Tower to admire the city's famous steeple-studded skyline from 880 feet up; head for the square by the monumental City Hall (an art, architecture, and history mini-tour all its own) and climb the 300-step tower that houses a clock accurate to one-sixth of a second every century.
      • Tivoli Gardens: The world's second-oldest amusement park has been delighting visitors since 1843 – right behind City Hall. Its unabashed sense of fun bursts from a Ferris wheel of hot-air balloons, a Viking ship merry-go-round, roller coasters, a fanciful Arabian palace, arcades, and a beer garden by a lake complete with swans.
      • More to see and do: In the city Hans Christian Andersen called home, the Little Mermaid Statue at the harbor is a must, but so is the entire waterfront – architectural standouts include the Opera House and the "Black Diamond" Library. The Marble Church has a great story behind it, and one of the world's largest copper domes on top. The National Museum is wonderfully hard to categorize; Glypotek and the National Gallery show works by Picasso, Matisse, and Rembrandt. Plus there's a zoo. And an aquarium. And a botanical garden.
      • Easy and inexpensive: Your confirmation email includes a one-time download link for an audio tour and corresponding numbered map. Just put on your headphones and hit play – each attraction is a separate track, so you set the pace.
