Chester is one of those old English cities that is almost too pretty to describe. In fact we're told that pictures just don't do it justice. Situated on the river Dee in historic Cheshire, you'll find it well worth the trip North to visit its ancient ruins and shop till your credit cards crack in its lovely old market. Founded as a Roman fortress in the first century, it's also worth exploring for its extensive and well-preserved Roman walls that were made from the local sandstone. Be sure to get a good look at the Roman amphitheater as well, which is still being excavated and explored.
