About this Falmouth tour
Dating back to the 12th century, St. Michael's Mount sits on top of a crag. At low tide, it's accessible via causeway. The rest of the time, you must take a boat to reach the site. After serving as a church, Benedictine priory and fortress, the site was converted into a private house in the 17th century.
The tour of the castle begins at the West Door. From there, you'll cross into the Hall, which served as the Captain of the Mount's living quarters during the 16th and 17th centuries. The living quarters lead into St. John's Room, a delightful little space that has been used as the Mount owner's sitting room for centuries. In the armory, you'll observe sporting weapons and military trophies the family brought back from varying wars.
Moving into the library, you'll now be standing in the oldest section of the Mount. The tour continues into the Chevy Chase Room. Originally the monk's refectory, the Chevy Chase Room is where the family took their meals. The room gets its current name from the plaster frieze consisting of a series of hunting scenes depicting the medieval ballad Chevy Chase.
Out on the South Terrace, which forms the roof of the large Victorian wing of the castle, you'll take in stunning views of Mount's Bay and the surrounding coastline. Before concluding the tour, you'll get a peek in the Priory Church; it is founded on the rock that forms the island's summit. This small, moving chapel still holds regular public worship services.
St. Michael's Mount's Many Functions
