Tallinn Old Town Guided Walking Tour
Tour Participation Requirements
Your walking tour up Toompea Hill takes you to the part of Tallinn called Upper Old Town. Once a coveted strategic stronghold, Estonian legend claims that the entire hill was originally more than a burial mound for the legendary King Kalev. It's also the best view in town.
Here Alexander Nevsky Cathedral dazzles with the kaleidoscope of color characteristic of Orthodox churches – a structure so delectable, you'll practically want to take a bite (please don't). Your visit also includes St. Mary's Cathedral, the 13th-century "Dome Church" and the only building on Toompea to have withstood the tests of fire, invasion, and time for eight centuries.
It's all downhill from Toompea – straight down through the labyrinthine streets of lower Tallinn to the proud "Old Thomas" spire of Town Hall, a remarkably preserved remnant of Gothic architecture built in 1404. From here you can wet your whistle or wear out your wallet in the countless pubs, restaurants, shops, and boutiques in the Town Hall square, a cheery medieval marketplace straight out of your favorite fairy tale.
Tallinn's Toompea Hill hides more than just legends and lore. Ever since the 17th century, underground tunnels and secret passages have played a key role in the fortifications of the Estonian capital. The networks of tunnels, designed to enable surveillance and better logistics in time of siege, were so numerous that even to this day many have never been found.
