      • Toompea Hill: Expanding from a fortress built here in 1050, the current castle is where Estonia's Parliament meets. But the views are so breathtaking that it's a wonder any legislating gets done. Look out over the Baltic and the Old City below, a World Heritage Site of red-roofed homes and church towers surrounded by medieval walls.
      • St. Olaf's Church: This Old City landmark may have been the world's tallest building after post-fire rebuilding around 1600. Climb to the top of the 400-foot tower for another knockout view of Tallinn.
      • Kiek in de Kok: "Peek into the Kitchen" was built as a defensive lookout post; its guards used to joke that they could look down the chimneys into the kitchen of the surrounding homes. This 125-foot cannon tower now houses an extensive museum of the town's fortifications, medieval weaponry, and life as it was lived here centuries ago.
      • Tales of Tallinn: Learn the stories behind places like the Great Coastal Gate and Fat Margaret Tower, 16th-century fortifications meant to intimidate potential invaders with their sheer scale and now site of the Estonian Maritime Museum. Visit Town Hall Square, the center of town life for 800 years, lined by beautifully restored merchant mansions, shops, cafes, markets, and the imposing Gothic stone Town Hall. Relax in the peaceful enclave of Kadriorg Park, where a famed Italian architect built a grand summer residence for Peter the Great in 1718. The beautiful Baroque palace is now a museum housing hundreds of paintings going back to the 16th century, and is surrounded by elaborate gardens.
      • Easy and inexpensive: Your confirmation email includes a one-time download link for an audio tour and corresponding numbered map. Just put on your headphones and hit play – each attraction is a separate track, so you set the pace.
