Some call Corsica "the mountain in the sea" – a nod to the rolling terrain that gives way to monolithic mountains of rock and the verdant vegetation unique to the island. And that may be one of the leading reasons hikers love Corsica – For hikers, Corsica is "the mountain in the sea with great hiking," thanks to exciting trails, incredible views, and the chance to learn more about this part of the world.

Your hike begins not far from the town center of Calvi, so you'll have the chance to learn about the city from your GoBe guide.

Your first stop is the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Serre. As you make your approach, you'll be astonished by the drama of the setting. Atop the ruins of a 15th-century sanctuary sits a chapel built four centuries later. In the courtyard behind the building, positioned on a towering granite boulder, stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. After exploring these man-made structures, you'll have time to marvel at a 360-degree panorama of sea, city, sky, and mountains.

And believe it or not, that's not even the best view of the day. Your hike reaches its zenith at the summit of Capu di a Veta. This mountain is marked by its rugged terrain, but the climb is worth it. Once you've reached the top, you'll be greeted by a wooden cross that soars to the sky, and all of Calvi and the sea spread out before you. Go ahead and congratulate yourself - you've conquered Capu.

Before he discovered America, did he hide Calvi?

Christopher Columbus claimed that he was born in Genoa, Italy, but which part? The residents of Calvi claim Columbus as one of their own, saying he was born in their city, then Genoese territory, in 1441. Why lie? Corsica didn't have a great reputation back then, so an ambitious Columbus may have taken liberties with his bio.
