Taxing rich tipplers
Pont Neuf bridge connects the historic Ile de la Cite to the Seine's Right and Left Banks. Despite its name (which means "New Bridge"), it is the oldest standing bridge in Paris. Completed by Henry IV in 1607, construction of the bridge was financed in an unorthodox manner for the time. The king levied a tax on every cask of wine brought into Paris, which explains why historians have written that "the rich and drunkards" paid for this urban work.
