- Venus de Milo: A depiction of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, this enduring sculpture was created of marble around 130-100 BC.
- Liberty Leading the People: Lady Liberty hoisting France’s tricolor flag is the focal point of this oil painting, commemorating the July Revolution that ousted King Charles X of France in 1830.
- Pyramide du Louvre: The Louvre’s art collections continue to the exterior in the form of a glass and metal pyramid, which is also the entrance to the museum
About this Paris tour
Every picture tells a story, but some of the most fascinating tales within the Louvre’s walls are those behind the masterpieces. The Pyramide was surrounded in controversy from its inception, with vocal complaints that the modernistic style conflicted with the museum’s French Renaissance aesthetic. Others claimed that the architect, I.M. Pei, was insufficiently French to be commissioned for a piece that would welcome visitors from around the world.
And the battlefield glory depicted in Liberty Leading the People was apparently lost on the citizen-king Louis-Philippe, who came to power as a result of the July Revolution that overthrew his predecessor. He didn’t appreciate the inflammatory political connotations and had it removed, lest he himself also be overthrown.
But even as your helpful tour guide directs you through a selection of the Louvre’s most famous pieces, taking time to explore collections of personal interest to you may be highlight of your visit. The Egyptian department includes over 50,000 items, making it one of the world’s largest such collections. The Greek, Etruscan and Roman section primarily features marble sculptures, including Venus de Milo. This collection started with several items acquired by King Francis I, who also brought the Mona Lisa to France.
The Empty Louvre
During World War II, the museum’s conservators knew that the Louvre’s collection of fine art was at risk of being commandeered by the Nazi Army that was quickly approaching. They rushed to evacuate tens of thousands of art works – anything that wasn’t nailed to the ground or too heavy to move was loaded onto a few dozen trucks. After closing down the Louvre, the convoy headed to the French countryside around Paris, entrusting the residents of private chateaux with the precious cargo. Imagine the surprise when Nazi officials demanded that the museum reopen … only to find barren walls, vacant hallways and cobwebs covering the few sculptures that remained.
