You're on an island . You're NOT on an island. Which of those statements is true is completely decided by the whims of the bay surrounding Mont Saint Michel, which can deliver a whopping difference of nearly 50  feet between high and low tide. Regardless of its current state, Mont Saint Michel is a UNESCO  World Heritage Site for  its cultural, historical, and architectural significance, as well as its human-created and natural beauty.

Speaking of human-created beauty, you must take the time to check out the Mont Saint Michel Benedictine Abbey, hovering high atop the islet's summit. Legend  has it that the archangel Michael appeared to Saint Aubert, bishop of the Avranches, in 709 and gave him marching orders to build a church here. After Aubert procrastinated awhile, Michael returned and punctured the bishop's head with a finger. Aubert's holey skull is actually on display at Saint Gervais Basilica in Avraches.

Of course the time is yours to spend it as you choose without judgment or prosecution. Whether it's watching the bay consume the coastline. Navigating the abbey's cloister, refectory, and garden. Museum hopping. Shopping like there's no tomorrow. Or sampling the local delicacies , including fluffy omelets and saltmarsh lamb. And all the while, you can be thankful that you weren't commanded to build the church.

      Cause (and effect!) way

There is one causeway that allows visitors to access Mont Saint Michel from the mainland. Thanks to a swift and relentless tide  (the most aggressive in all of Europe), many tourists who have attempted to reach the islet any other way have paid the price with their life. Even if the rising water didn't get them, the treacherous mud and quicksand surrounding Mont Saint Michel could also put them in peril.

Full refunds issued for cancellations made 7 full days prior to the date and time of requested services. Cancellations made within the 7-day and 72-hour window will receive a 50% refund of purchase total. Purchases are non-refundable inside of 72 hours.
