Private Walking Tour of the Left Bank

      Paris, France
From (USD) $347 Per Guide (Maximum 6 Guests)
      • More than a guide: Even by GoBe's high standards, your tour leader – officially known as a docent – is a standout. A Paris insider with scholarly creds, they'll bring you right up to speed on the origins, highlights, and character of this captivating city.
      • Extra attention: With a maximum group size of six, you'll engage directly with your docent, get in-depth answers to your questions, maybe even have the option to tweak the experience to match the group's prime interests.
      • The Left Bank (Rive Gauche): Bohemian, cobbled, church-laden, and student-filled, this side of the Seine oozes with intellectual sparkle and artsy cafes made famous in 20th-century avant-garde lit. Highlights include the Latin Quarter, Luxembourg Gardens, created in 1612 by Marie de' Medici, and the Pantheon, where many of French literature's greats are buried.
      • The Right Bank (Rive Droite): This is Paris' hip, swank, grandly architectural international side – the side where the kings used to hang out. Crossing via the pedestrian Pont des Arts bridge, you'll encounter everything from the ornate Louvre and Palais Royale (with its cool courtyard art installation), to the renovated historic market district of Les Halles, and the strikingly postmodern Pompidou Centre.
      • Discussion stops: At various points during the walk, you'll pause someplace scenic   – like the riverside square at Place du Châtelet – to spend a few minutes talking about what you've seen, how it all connects together, and how this city's two distinct "halves" create a truly magnificent whole.
      About This Paris Tour

Step into any bistro, brasserie, or cafe in Paris and ask a local which bank of the River Seine they love the most, and their opinion will surely be passionate (it's an inherently French characteristic). But in truth, each side of this city is so filled with charm and color, the best answer would have to be "both!"

In many ways, one half makes no sense without the other. But together? C'est magnifique!

Whether you're a first-time sightseer looking for an in-depth Paris intro, or a repeat visitor curious to get a deeper perspective on what makes this city tick, this Paris Orientation "walking seminar" is a great way to go.

The setting is incomparable, the itinerary is well thought out,  and your docent is a font of fascinating information – about the big landmarks, the small places that populate famous stories written about the Paris life (and paintings that depict it), the seemingly-endless array of splendid palaces and cathedrals, and the modern style and decadent fashion on display along tony shopping boulevards.

Nestled along the sensuous curves of the Seine and laced together by bridges and river islands that each have their own story, modern Paris doesn't really have a best side. It's got all sides covered.

After a half-day spent getting oriented with us, you will, too.

      Tons of love

The graceful, steel-arched Pont des Arts walkers bridge you'll stroll across on this tour dates from 1984, having replaced an original of the same design erected in this spot back in Napoleon's times. This new one almost succumbed to romance at a young age, though. Over a million "love locks" (padlocks attached to its railings by visiting couples), weighing in at some 45 tons, were removed in 2015 after engineers concluded the whole shebang could fail and collapse into the Seine. Now, the locks are illegal here. But selfies are A-OK.
