Step inside Versailles and leave the modern, ordinary world behind as you travel back in time to the glory days of French royalty. Versailles was built in the early 1600s as a royal hunting lodge by King Louis XIII. His son, Louis XIV, expanded the lodge and began using Versailles as his residence during his long reign. The glittering splendor of Versailles became a fitting symbol of the monarch known as the Sun King.
You'll be taken right to the heart of the palace with a priority access tour of Versailles. You'll be picked up from your hotel in Paris, along with others, and taken to Versailles for a morning excursion. This will be an intimate group—only eight people, so you’ll get to ask as many questions on your ride as you like. Your driver guide will be more than happy to share his local knowledge with you!
For over a century, Versailles was the center of the French political world. Its Baroque architectural details have been an inspiration since the days of the Sun King. You’ll get to tour the incredible palace, including the apartments of the king and queen, where Marie Antoinette and her husband Louis XVI lived before the French Revolution. Gaze upon your own reflection in the Hall of Mirrors and imagine yourself as a courtier of old France, waiting for a glimpse of the king or queen. Stroll through the fabulous gardens on your own before you return to Paris. Live like royalty for the day at Versailles!
See and be seen
The Hall of Mirrors in Versailles Palace is a wonder to behold. Over 300 mirrors decorate the arches of the hall, reflecting windows with a view of the palace gardens. When the kings of France still walked the corridors of Versailles, the Hall of Mirrors was the number one gathering spot for people who wanted to see the royal presence. Grand parties were also held in the Hall of Mirrors, including the costume ball where King Louis XV met his mistress. She was arrayed as a goddess and he was dressed like a tree!
