The Sun King, Louis XIV, certainly celebrated the Baroque aesthetic of leaving no surface unadorned. His magnificent chateau encompasses more than 700 rooms decorated with gilded paneling, patterned floors, and painted walls, plus exquisite furniture and works of art. Where to begin amid all this grandeur? Count on GoBe to guide you through the palace and share titillating details and insights into the lifestyle of the royal court.

This audio tour takes you into the palace's most impressive rooms. See and feel the splendor of the King's Grand Apartment with its seven salons embellished with crystal chandeliers, gilded accessories, and rich tapestries. Admire the Queen's Grand Apartment, laid out in a mirror image of king's, and take in the grandeur of the Coronation Room and the Queen's Bedroom, once occupied by Marie-Antoinette.
Take your time marveling at the glittering Hall of Mirrors, a spectacular room designed to receive and impress the king's visitors. Created by the famous architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, this astonishing space is almost 240 feet long and illuminated by 17 windows and 350 mirrors. Glance up to see the gloriously painted vaulted ceiling and gaze through the windows for breath-stealing views of the palace gardens.
Louis XIV considered these gardens as important as the palace itself, and in 1661 he commissioned Andre Le Notre to design the lavish grounds. You'll have time to wander through the gardens and discover the beautiful statues, fountains, flower beds, and woodland vistas. Immersed in this dazzling landscape, it may be possible to feel, if only for a moment, how the Sun King may have savored a quiet moment in his garden.
      The golden gates
The original ornate gates of Versailles were torn down by the common people during the French Revolution. More than 200 years later, in 1980, they were replaced with an exact copy of the originals. Replicating the 15-ton gates required dozens of skilled craftsmen, 100,000 gold leaves to decorate the wrought iron, and generous donations from private donors totaling eight million dollars.
