      Activity Level

This experience is rated mild. To participate fully, you may be required to walk over primarily even surfaces at a leisurely pace. You may encounter a limited number of steps, cobblestones, or uneven surfaces, and you may have to stand for extended periods of time.

      Age restrictions

      Suitable for all ages.

If you're one of those who prefers to take the scenic route over the quick one, you'll find this leisurely drive absolutely epic in nature. And that's just what you'll discover: monumental geological formations that reach up to touch the sky, with infinite green landscapes that flow to the coastline.

Indeed, the Col de Bavella (Bavella Pass) features some of the most striking landscape features on the island. The Aiguilles de Bavella (Bavella Needles) loom large over the landscape, rising a mile high. Marvel at the range of colors they reflect – from ochre to golden, depending on the sun's position in the sky.

The rolling ranges and forests of pine and oak lead you to the midst of the Alta Rocca region, where the charming hamlet of Zonza sits in the shadow of the Needles. Its location makes it a magnet for outdoors enthusiasts setting out to hike the nearby trails, climb the rocky terrain, or fish the nearby river for trout. Mohammed V, the one-time Sultan of Morocco, spent a part of his brief exile in Zonza, which hardly seems like a hardship. Spend some time exploring the village and its delightful boutiques.

Your return to Porto-Vecchio takes you through the Massif de l'Ospédale, a sprawling region of forest and rocky outcroppings. The wealthier families of Porto-Vecchio used to flee here during the hot summer months, escaping the ravages of the malaria-ridden marshes.

The endless blue sea that greets you as you wind your way back to Porto-Vecchio may herald the conclusion of this incredible road trip, but the memories (and photographs) of the journey will stay with you forever.

Living and dying by the code

Modern Corsicans hold the honor of their family very seriously, but they have nothing on their ancestors. Blood feuds didn't require much of a spark. A broken promise. A harmless flirtation. Bad customer service. The code of vendetta demanded retribution. It might start with simple vandalism but would quickly escalate to murder and not just of the offender, but perhaps descendants of that person through generations. Corsica may not be the birthplace of vendetta, but it sure did perfect the art of it.
