About this Batumi tour
The city of Batumi, former Black Sea getaway of fun-loving apparatchiks during the Soviet era, has completely reinvented itself as…the Black Sea getaway of everyone. And this tour introduces you to much of what everyone needs to see when here.
Like the Holy Mother Virgin Nativity Cathedral, built with special stone that changes color with the weather. The opulent City Hall, built in the 1700s and a vivid symbol of modern self-governing Batumi. The Adjara State Art Museum – where you'll view a collection of paintings by Georgian masters Aivazovsky and Pirosmani, and other notable artists.
The Astronomical Clock atop the elegant tower of the former National Bank of Georgia building in Europe Square is a stunner. Its complex dial shows sun and the moon position, moon phase, meridian and horizon. Close by, the State Drama Theatre is modern (1952) but looks more like an ancient Greek temple.
Strolling through the popular ribbon of seaside park Batumians call "the Boulevard," you'll see fountains, statues, and other landmarks. Laid out in the 1880s, it's grown to three times its original length. You won't try to see it all but one of its sights can't be missed: the immense twisting-helix Alphabet Tower is one-of-a-kind tribute to Georgia's one-of-a-kind alphabet.
When you enter Piazza Square, you'll think you just landed in St. Mark's in Venice. This nearly-two-acre central courtyard is filled with alfresco tables and surrounded by intricate arcaded buildings. When world-famous musicians visit Batumi, this is where they perform.
Decoder ring recommended
Linguistic geeks love Georgian for its utterly unique 33-letter alphabet and crazily strung-together consonants, but for normal people it's a nightmare – a language unrelated to any other anywhere, even in neighboring countries. Has something to do with ancient Aramaic, supposedly. So on this tour, you'll be thanking your lucky stars you have a guide who speaks and reads the local tongue. Otherwise you'd have to figure out how to say gvprtskvni. And don't even ask how that's spelled in Georgian.
Arriving by cruise ship? Please proceed pier side, to the port entrance, and look for our tour representative with the displayed logo sign.
Most shops are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8 p.m., but some stay open until 9 p.m. The local currency is the Georgia lari and it is divided into 100 tetri. Euros and dollars are accepted at most establishments.
Plan on walking for 1-2 miles, mostly on paved paths, with inclines and steps to climb. If you have limited mobility, this tour may be too challenging for you to enjoy and maintain the pace of the group. It is not wheelchair accessible.
