      Age restrictions

      Suitable for all ages.

In a country with as many mountain forests and rolling woodlands as Georgia, it's no surprise that woodcarving traditions are a vibrant part of the cultural legacy. This GoBe tour brings you face-to-face with a prominent practitioner and guardian of that heritage: internationally recognized artist Kemal Turmanidze, whose works are on display at the Adjara State Museum and in exhibitions worldwide. He'll show you some of his techniques as he leads you through his studio and salon, where many of his pieces are displayed in tableaus.

But artistry is in evidence all around Batumi. Like on our drive through Old Town, gridded into square blocks by Roman tradition and filled with landmarks. And along the legendary ribbon of seaside park and promenade locals call "the Boulevard" – with its sculptures, fountains, colonnades, and lush landscape design.

A drive up to the viewing platform on Mt. Batumi will reveal painterly views of the sea, the city, and the hilly green landscape that surrounds it. You'll toast the beauty over a cup of coffee or tea served at the mount-top restaurant, where they understand the art of brewing.

The tour also visits two lovingly restored old churches, reconsecrated as holy spaces after years of Soviet era disuse. The tiny Church of St. Barbara stands proudly in its coat of white and blue, while the classically Gothic towers of the Church of the Virgin Mary house elaborate stained glass windows and a venerable old organ.

These two, and many other structures you'll encounter, seem to hum with a pulse of reinvention that has helped Batumi emerge as an exciting new city to be enjoyed by all.

      Say what?

The sound of spoken Georgian you may hear during your tour is like no other language you'll hear anywhere else. In fact, it often includes whole sounds you've never encountered before – made with parts of someone's throat and lungs you didn't know could work together that way. We recommend you not try these sounds at home; leave them to native Georgian speakers. You could hurt yourself. Or accidently say something really filthy in Georgian.
