      About This Berlin Tour

Your private vehicle and driver will pick you up from your Berlin city hotel and take you to meet your guide, who will be waiting for you at this famous former airport.

It may no longer be a major airport, but the grounds on which Airport Templehof stands, are always brimming with life. What was once regarded as Europe’s third-busiest airport saw its final flight take off from the runway in 2008. Berlin’s urban dwellers and tourists from all corners of the globe enjoy making use of this public park.

The ‘birthplace of aviation’ has an interesting past. Originally, the area was used as a parade ground, before the German forces and Prussian forces utilized the space. From the years 1936-1941, an impressive new terminal was built. Several years passed before the expanse of land was opened to the general public.

Third Reich leaders hailed the new terminal a testament to architecture. Time stands still inside the building, which was designed with a mile-long roof that 80,000 people could observe ground and air demonstrations from. A knowledgeable guide will inform you about the airport facilities during this extensive tour.

When the weather is pleasant, it’s not uncommon to see people relaxing on deck chairs and picnicking on grassy sections of land surrounding the runway. Between the years 1938 and 1939, approximately 40 domestic flights and 52 foreign flights departed and arrived at the airport. Listen carefully as a local expert opens up about the airport’s association with Hitler’s plans to make Berlin a world capital.

      Flying Over the Berlin Wall

While we’re on the topic of flying, it’s interesting to learn that in the midst of the Cold War, a handful of people attempted to get over Berlin Wall by flying. The latest failed attempt was a youngster from East Germany, who crashed his hot air balloon into power lines. The best stunts were pulled off by the Bethke brothers. Methods of escape included floating along Elbe River on an inflatable mattress, soaring through the air on a bow and arrow-fired steel cable, and flying a lightweight plane!
