Berlin’s Underground Station & Shelters by Private Vehicle & Guide
Tour Participation Requirements
If you’re not a fan of the dark or confined spaces, this tour of underground Berlin is not for you! Your private vehicle and driver will pick you up from your Berlin city hotel and take you to meet your guide, who will be waiting to take you on your walking tour, at the Berlin underground tube station, better known as U-Bahn. With origins dating back to the late 1800’s, it goes without saying that this station has a rich and fascinating history.
During World War II, the underground transportation system was partially devastated by Allied air raids and its north-south tunnel was destroyed approaching the end of the Battle of Berlin. Reconstruction followed, but further work was put to a stop due to restrictions associated with the construction of the Berlin Wall.
This concrete manifestation separated East and West Germany – two areas that felt the full force of the Cold War. Feel it for yourself as you closely inspect an original WWII bunker from the inside-out. A slightly more modern bunker from the Cold War era can also be explored on this tour.
Designed to withstand a nuclear blast, these fallout shelters were constructed as a preventative measure to safeguard the public, should another war have kicked off.
In the event of an attack, the bunkers would have served as bomb shelters. Exposure to any radioactivity or hazardous debris would have been minimal. These days, the underground is constantly expanding and a total of 173 stations are included in the rapid transit railway network.
