Entering the city is a truly impressive sight. The Johannisburg Palace, one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in Germany, sits on a bluff above the River Main dominating the center of the city. A local expert will guide your personal discovery of this Renaissance masterpiece. Enjoy ample time to explore the residential rooms, unique museums and exhibits, art galleries, picturesque gardens, Palace Chapel with its elaborate high altar, and the Mediterranean-style Pompeiianum. Commissioned by King Ludwig I, this idealized replica of a Roman villa is based on excavations in Pompeii.
Enjoy an hour of free time on your own for sightseeing or lunch. Once you've refueled, it's time to re-join your guide for a fascinating walk around Aschaffenburg's wonderful and romantic old city center. Be charmed by the half-timbered houses, specialty shops, sidewalk cafes, and Bavarian churches that are hundreds of years old. Enjoy the sights at your own pace without being herded around in a large group, before returning in luxury to Frankfurt. Now that's the way to see Aschaffenburg.
I now pronounce you slightly tipsy
Did you know that Bavaria's Oktoberfest owes its existence to a royal wedding? It was back in October 1810 when the future King Ludwig I got hitched to Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The ensuing festivities were such a hit, the locals decided to do it all over again the next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. Unlike the hokey pokey, this is one wedding tradition just about everyone can get behind!
