About This Frankfurt Tour
Are you ready to marvel at some seriously beautiful buildings? When it comes to historically significant architecture, the small city of Wurzburg delivers in a big way. Sure, the Baroque period may have gotten its start in late 16th-century Italy, but its footprints were spread all over Germany in the form of elaborate fortresses and royal palaces. Welcome to wonderful Wurzburg, where you'll see some of the best.
Let GoBe whisk you away from Frankfurt by luxury sedan or van to spend a day in this charming city. Explore the Wurzburg Residence, called "the castle above all castles." It's regarded as one of the greatest examples of European Baroque architecture. On its grounds you will find the Hofgarten, a spectacular French-style garden laid out between 1703 and 1774. Widely considered the best-preserved Rococo garden in Germany, its centerpiece is a large lake with fountains and an elaborate sculpture crowned by Pegasus.
Next, join your guide for a walk up the hill (or be driven up) to the Marienberg Fortress high above the city. We assure you the ascent is well worth it. At the top you'll find the spectacular monumental staircase hall with its huge fresco, museums, a beer garden, and a wonderful view of the red-roofed city hemmed in on all four sides by rolling hills.
Before it's time to call it a day, you will have two splendid hours to spend as you wish. Grab some lunch, do a little souvenir shopping, or make more discoveries in Wurzburg. Wunderbar!
Napoleon slept here
The Wurzburg Residence was commissioned by Johann Philipp Franz von Schonborn, Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg. The fabulously ornate design of this royal palace makes it clear that old Johann was more prince than bishop. The palace's architecture was a conspicuous confirmation of great wealth. Napoleon Bonaparte, who slept at the Residence on three occasions, was said to have called it "the nicest parsonage in Europe." Let us know if you think he was right!
