About This Frankfurt Tour
Question: what do you get when you combine one driver, one local tour guide, and seven hours to explore a town seemingly plucked from the world of fairy tales? Answer: an unforgettable day in Rudesheim am Rhein, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area.
Join this private tour and spend a day in a valley straight out of a picture book. Climb into a luxury sedan or van, and lose yourself among medieval castles, gothic church steeples, half-timbered houses, and terraced vineyards nestled alongside the beautiful Rhine River. Myths and legends abound here, and you will hear them all at the remains of the monumental 13th-century Ehrenfels Castle and adjacent Mice Tower.
After an exciting and eye-opening tour of the ruins, relax and enjoy some free time on your own for lunch in Rudesheim. Your guide will be happy to direct you to some of the best restaurants on the riverfront. Feeling a little thirsty? Wine growing has a long tradition in Rudesheim and has established the town's reputation as a producer of acclaimed Riesling and pinot noir wines.
After lunch, reunite with your group for a guide-led walking tour of the city's medieval lanes and cobblestone alleyways. Grab your cameras for the Drosselgasse, a must-see destination for any visitor to Rudesheim. This famous lane is lined with lively pubs and courtyards, with music and dancers spilling out onto the sidewalks. You are encouraged to join in. When in Rudesheim, do as the Germans do!
A tale of mice and one very selfish man
The Mice Tower (Mauseturm) gets its name from a rather gruesome legend. The Archbishop of Mainz refused to share his full grain stores while the region's peasants suffered a severe famine. Hearing the desperate calls of the starving, the Archbishop said, "Listen to the cries of the corn mice." Suddenly, from every nook and cranny, thousands of mice emerged to drive the bishop from his home. He escaped into his watchtower only to be eaten alive by the pursuing mice.
