About This Hamburg Tour
If you want to experience great shopping and get a feel for the city of Hamburg at the same time, Jungfernstieg is the perfect spot to start. This promenade along Lake Binnenalster in the heart of the city is part of this GoBe tour, and it's the place to be for travelers and locals alike. The street was first created in 1235 after Count Adolph IV ordered a dam to be built over the Alster for a corn mill. The pond became a lake, eventually named Lake Binnenalster, and the ensuing city land helped Hamburg expand.
As time went on, the street was widened, linden trees were planted, and the Jungfernstieg got a sophisticated feel. But the Great Fire of 1842 destroyed what was there. After the fire, the street was rebuilt in a Neoclassical style, and shopping arcades established.
Today you can find both high-end and low-end shopping there on this waterfront street. There are sophisticated jewelry stores and shoe boutiques, as well as hip fashion shops. Both German and international brands are represented there, like Chopard, American Apparel, and Burberry. There's even a NIVEA-Haus, billed as an "oasis of relaxation" featuring not just the popular product, but post-shopping massages.
And like all good shopping expeditions, Jungfernstieg is not just about shopping; it's about people-watching. That's how the street got its name, in fact. Jungfernstieg comes from the word "jungfer," German for "unmarried woman" and "steig," which means "walk." Back in the day, Germans looking to find husbands for their single daughters would visit the street on Sundays with the young women and go for a stroll. While Hamburg citizens back then didn't have Beyonce's Single Ladies song as a soundtrack, men looking for wives did pay attention.
Shopping is not supposed to be brutal
The Hamburger Meile shopping center has in interesting history. It opened in 1970 as the Hamburger Strasse at an area heavily bombed during World War II. The original design was done in the Brutalist architectural style, which wasn't exactly an inspiring one, with concrete and exposed shafts. In recent years, the mall was renamed and completely renovated inside and out with a sleek, curved aluminum and glass style, one that's much more appealing to shoppers.
Please meet in the lobby/reception area of your hotel. Be sure to indicate the name of your hotel at check-out or email Hello@GoBe.com so we know where to meet you. Your guide will be holding a sign with your name on it.
Bring small coins for the restroom.
In need of retail therapy after your tour? Your guide can advise you where to go in search of that "must have" souvenir to take home. Be sure to have some local currency and a backpack for all your great buys. As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind. Flat shoes make walking on cobblestones much easier.
Walking is at your own pace and the amount is at each person's discretion. Most modern areas are wheelchair accessible but the historic ones are not. Expect some obstacles. Bring a companion to offer any assistance. Folding wheelchairs only, please.
