Benz there, done that
Heidelberg is located along the path of the Bertha Benz Memorial Route, which traces the first long distance automobile ride, taken in 1888. The driver was Bertha Benz, wife of the inventor of the first car designed to produce its own power. Frustrated with her husband's inability to market his new invention, Bertha borrowed the car and drove to visit her mother some 65 miles away, stopping in Heidelberg and other towns on her trip. Thus the era of road trips began!
