Interactive Potsdam Private Walking Tour
- Historic town center: Potsdam's history comes alive on its main streets and sprawling squares. Enjoy the old city gates, soaring churches, and interesting neighborhoods like the Dutch Quarter and the Russian settlement of Alexandrowka.
- Sanssouci Palace: Even Frederick the Great, one of the most influential rulers of Prussia, needed time away from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court. He found it here in this grand single-story villa he called home.
- St. Nicholas Church: This iconic church stands out clearly in Potsdam's Old Market Square thanks to its enormous green dome. Built first in the 1830s, the church was damaged in World War II but rebuilt faithfully afterward.

Most people know Potsdam for one thing: palaces. And rightly so! The palaces of Potsdam are some of the world's most iconic. The city was the traditional summer home of the Prussian royalty, just a short journey outside of Berlin. The Cecilienhof Palace was built during World War I, the twilight years of German monarchy. In 1945 it entered into history as the site of the Potsdam Conference, where the allied victors of WWII came together to discuss the future of Germany.
More fabled even that this momentous event is the Sanssouci Palace that perches above extensive terraces that lead the eye upward to the splendid structure. Frederick the Great had this surprisingly intimate palace built in the first years of his long 18th-century reign. Imagine yourself as Prussian gentry of the Enlightenment as you ascend through the lush gardens.
Less palatial attractions abound in Potsdam, too. You can tailor this tour to your desires. Check out the towering dome of the 19th century St. Nicholas Church on the Old Market Square, and the Old Town Hall, built in the 1700s and saved after damage in WWII. Potsdam is yours to explore!
A little bit of Dutch
While Potsdam is rightly known as a repository of some of Germany's finest national architecture, one popular part of town shows off another side of the area's history. In the early 1700s, Dutch artisans were invited to Prussia by King Frederick Wilhelm I and many of them settled in Potsdam. The Dutch Quarter, as it's known, shows off over 100 red brick buildings constructed using the distinctive design of houses more frequently seen in places like Amsterdam. This intriguing little corner of Potsdam is the largest collection of Dutch architecture outside the Netherlands. It is a little slice of Holland, and even hosts a tulip festival!
