      Meeting point

Please make your way to the coach parking lot at the pier and look for your GoBe Rep with a displayed sign.

      Helpful hints

Bring small coins for the restroom.

In need of retail therapy after your tour? Your guide can advise you where to go in search of that "must have" souvenir to take home. Be sure to have some local currency and a backpack for all your great buys. As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind. Flat shoes make walking on cobblestones much easier.

      Getting around

Walking is at your own pace and the amount is at each person's discretion. Most modern areas are wheelchair accessible but the historic ones are not. Expect some obstacles. Bring a companion to offer any assistance. Folding wheelchairs only, please.

You don't have to be a history buff to appreciate Berlin, but you may become one by the end of your day here. This is a city that has shaped history and was shaped by it, and this GoBe tour is the perfect combination of a guide's knowledgeable introduction and time to see the sights your way.

There's no shortage of options: You could head to the Reichstag, where Parliament meets. The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's version of the Arc de Triomphe. Or the Berlin Wall Memorial, a concrete reminder of the Cold War's coldest days. Of course, you could just head out for some shopping or to dine at any of the city's celebrated restaurants.

It's been a quarter-century now since East and West Berlin became just Berlin. The upheavals of the 20th century brought about a new and (by German standards) peaceful era of prosperity. Germany dominates the continent with the strength of its economy, not its military, and Berliners live their lives with confidence and an eye on the future. But lest they forget, they keep reminders of their past all around.

      Victory held prisoner by Napoleon

The Brandenburg Gate, modeled after the Acropolis in Athens, is crowned by the Quadriga, a sculpture of the winged goddess of victory driving a horse-drawn chariot. Napoleon considered her a spoil of war, taking her to Paris after thrashing the Prussians in 1806. After defeating Napoleon at Waterloo and entering Paris, Field Marshall Gebhart Von Blucher returned the Quadriga to Berlin in 1815.
