Highlights of Weimar Private Walking Tour

      Weimar, Germany
      From (USD) $233 Per Person
      • Artistic abodes: See the dwelling places of some of Germany's most important artists and poets, namely Goethe, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Friedrich Schiller. These three luminaries were only some of the interesting historical characters who at some point called Weimer home.
      • Ilmpark: Experience 18th century Germany firsthand with a walk through Park an der Ilm, established in the late 1700s under the influence of Johann von Goethe. It is part of the Classical Weimar UNESCO World Heritage Site.
      • Market square and town hall: The market square has been the heart of Weimar for centuries. There has been a town hall on this site since at least the 14th century and the current 19th century structure certainly does justice to the brooding gothic nature of the densely forested state of Thuringia.
      About this Weimar tour

Weimar has a long history of inspiration. Over the centuries, artists, writers, architects, and designers have left their mark on the city. On this GoBe walking tour, you will walk in the footsteps of some of the most influential people of the German past as you follow your costumed guide through the old town.

You can see the residence of Goethe, one of Germany's most important poets and dramatists, and even stroll through a park that hasn’t changed much since the great playwright relaxed there over two centuries ago. Fellow author Friedrich Schiller also lived in Weimar, where you can still see his house. A statue commemorating the extraordinary friendship of these two literary luminaries stands in a prominent location before the National Theater. Just opposite the theater is the Bauhaus Museum, dedicated to the intriguing modernist architectural style born in Weimar between the World Wars.

Reaching even further back in time, marvel at the home of Lucas Cranach the Elder, an artist who documented Germany's Protestant Reformation with his paintings. His house stands on the main square of Weimar, across from the imposing Neo-Gothic town hall. One of Cranach's most famous works, an altarpiece depicting the artist present at the crucifixion, resides in the St. Peter and Paul Church in town. His son completed the painting in 1555.

Ask questions. Stop to look at interesting things. Take it all in. Sample one of Weimar's traditional bratwursts or admire the lush ginkgo tree planted by Goethe in 1820. This is your chance to experience the Weimar that inspires you.

      Well-tempered Weimar

Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most important musical composers of the Baroque period, was one of the many artistic geniuses to spend time in Weimar. If we could ask Bach about his time in Weimar today, however, his feelings might very well be mixed. On one hand, he composed prolifically in Weimar, including his masterpiece collection, The Well-Tempered Clavier. On the other hand, a dispute with the Duke of Weimar landed Bach in jail for a month after he resigned his post as concert master. At least he used his incarceration productively, writing even more music!
