      About This Corfu Tour

This tour takes you to a hilltop monastery founded in the 13th Century, a treasure trove of Byzantine icons, paintings, and mosaics overlooking the village and bayside beach coves of Paleokastritsa. You'll see the Venetian harbor fortresses of Corfu's Old Town and Parisian Liston Street, with time to shop and explore. And you'll visit one of the most beautiful places on the island, built for a woman whose life unfolded like a Greek tragedy.

Austria's Empress Elisabeth came to Corfu in 1890, a year after losing her mother, father, sister, and, in a murder-suicide that rocked royal Europe, her son. Never happy in Vienna, at odds with an overbearing mother-in-law, "Sissi" had escaped here often, captivated by the dramatic landscapes and fascinated by Greek culture. Now she commissioned a grand palace on a hill, where she hoped to take refuge in art, myth, and nature.
It worked – for a time. Studded with statues of gods and goddesses, the palace's lavish gardens offer majestic views of green hills stretching to the blue sea. The magnificent interiors abound with stately stairwells and marble terraces, rich woods and stunning artwork, including the famous Four Seasons ceiling fresco.
Overlooking it all is a portrait of the empress who found inspiration in the tragic figure of Achilles, and named her palace after him. As you admire the garden statue of the great warrior in his death throes, and the enormous painting of The Triumph of Achilles, remember tragic Sissi. Slain by an assassin looking for someone else, she left a triumph of beauty and culture in her beloved Corfu. 1,591

The bright side of foreign conquest
Corfu has a painful history of foreign occupiers, but it wasn't all bad. Old Town's architectural pastiche is a delight even on a short walk: The elegant homes around the harbor have a distinct Venetian flair, and the narrow lanes and vaulted passages of the Kantounia feel like Genoa or Naples. The Palace of Saints Michael and Georges look like a British manor transplanted to bustling Spianada Square. And the French modeled the archways and swinging gas lamps of Liston Street on Paris' Rue de Rivoli.
