Bay of Paleokastritsa, Views from Lakones, Wine and Snack
Tour Participation Requirements
This tour has it all: a sightseeing drive through Corfu's lush valleys, mountaintop views, picturesque villages, and a love that might have been. Plus lunch.
It begins with Corfu's famous accidental tourist: Odysseus, hero of Homer's epic Odyssey, now shipwrecked on the sandy shores of Paleokastritsa. Emerging from the trees – naked – he finds Princess Nausicaa and her servants tossing a ball around. Odysseus is smitten, and Nausicaa (whose name, in part, is Greek for "burn") warms to him. But then ... nothing. The promising sparks are never fanned into flame, and Odysseus goes home.
It's a sad story. But it unfolds in a setting that, 3,000 years later, retains its epic beauty. And this tour takes you there.
Paleokastritsa lies below dramatic cliffs and a 17th-Century monastery on sheltered, crystal-clear bays surrounded by olive groves. Its beautiful beaches, scenic harbor, and interesting sea caves make the place where Odysseus swam ashore one of Corfu's most popular resorts. (Locals say the rocks jutting through the water are the remains of his ships; you'll have about 45 minutes to judge for yourself.)
You'll see more of Paleokastritsa from the heights of Lakones, a traditional mountain village of centuries-old houses and churches. And at a hillside taverna in the village of Makrades you'll be treated to a hearty snack (the Greeks call it meze) of local favorites like salami, tzatziki, and cheese pie. Enjoy the views from the terrace, and raise a glass to poor Odysseus: burned in the first known tale of unfulfilled love, burned again when Nausicca marries his son.
The Old Ball Game
About a thousand years after Nausicaa's game of catch on Paleokastritsa beach, a female scholar in Corcyra (Corfu's name in the 2nd Century B.C.) credited her with inventing all ball games – probably because Homer's epic made her the first literary character to play one. Today's scholars debate whether Homer even existed, never mind connecting him to ball playing, while today's ballplayers love connecting for a homer.
