About This Katakolon Tour
It's been nearly 3,000 years since the first sprinters approached the starting line at Olympia, but the scale of the place still amazes. This was a self-contained city, as ambitious as the marvels (or monstrosities – opinions vary) of modern Olympic hosts. Athletes lived, trained, and prayed for victory here. A row of treasuries held fantastic offerings of gold and precious gems. An Olympic committee of priests and administrators presided over a museum's worth of altars and temples. And distinguished visitors soaked in hot baths inside extravagant villas.
As you approach that same starting line, in the stadium where 20,000 fans cheered on their heroes, you can imagine being one such hero, poised for your Olympic moment.
A different kind of moment awaits in the wine cellars and tasting rooms of the Mercouri Estates. Greece's winemaking tradition predates even the Olympic tradition – by thousands of years, in fact – and the Mercouris launched their era 150 years ago. Many generations later, the family is known worldwide for excellence, effusive hospitality, and generous samples.
You'll see the original family residence, their small church, the wine press, and the French oak casks that hold the estate's reds, whites, rosés, and dessert wines. Sip some samples to find your favorite and take home a bottle or two at a special price. After your tour, under shady trees overlooking the Ionian Sea, you can watch peacocks and geese, amble by. It's another memorable moment – and you're bringing this one home.
Sports Drink of Champions
Six-time Olympic champion Milo of Croton, a wrestler who competed between 540 and 520 B.C., was said to consume 10 liters of wine a day (along with 20 lbs. each of meat and bread.) And Hippocrates, creator of the oath still taken by new doctors, would prescribe wine for athletes' aching muscles, advising them to "Get drunk once or twice." His patients no doubt responded with some ancient version of the high five.
